Praja Shakthi Programme Set to Empower Rural Communities
The government’s ambitious community empowerment initiative, the ‘Praja Shakthi’ National Programme, will be officially launched at Temple Trees under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Aimed at ensuring equitable economic growth, the programme focuses on uplifting rural and estate communities, where 95.3% of the country’s multidimensionally poor reside. It seeks to reorient existing initiatives into a unified, policy-driven framework to better identify development needs, implement targeted actions, and monitor outcomes.
The first meeting of the Praja Shakthi National Operations Committee was held yesterday (24) at the Presidential Secretariat, chaired by Minister of Rural Development Upali Pannilage and Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake. The committee includes nine ministry secretaries and chief secretaries of provincial councils, with the Senior Additional Secretary (Development Administration) to the President Kapila Janaka Bandara serving as convener.
The programme will establish Praja Shakthi Councils, strengthen local governance, and build institutional capacity to deliver effective, inclusive development. It also aims to reinforce Sri Lanka’s national social welfare system to better support vulnerable populations and unlock the country’s productive potential.
