Shiranthi Rajapaksa Refutes Absconding Claims, Says She Is Not Arjun Mahendran

Reports indicate that former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, who recently left the country unexpectedly, has submitted a letter through her legal counsel to the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) detailing her situation.

Rajapaksa, who was previously noticed to appear before the FCID on the 24th regarding ongoing investigations into alleged financial irregularities involving the “Siriliya Saviya” fund, departed for Singapore shortly before her scheduled appearance.

Her sudden departure drew comparisons to former Central Bank Governor Arjun Mahendran—a key figure in the Central Bank bond scam—who fled to Singapore under the pretext of attending a wedding and promising to return. That statement was delivered in Parliament on Mahendran’s behalf by then-Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Mahendran has since ignored all Sri Lankan judicial proceedings.

However, unlike Mahendran, legal representatives acting on behalf of Shiranthi Rajapaksa have formally communicated with the FCID regarding her absence.

Meanwhile, other sources suggest that she has undergone major eye surgery, which may serve as a legal justification to prolong her stay abroad.
