August 06, Colombo (LNW): A tense situation was reported at Magazine Prison in Borella on Thursday (06) night, prompting authorities to strengthen security measures in and around the prison complex.
Sri Lanka Police confirmed that security personnel had been placed on high alert as officers moved swiftly to contain the disturbance and prevent the situation from escalating.
According to the latest information, the unrest began at around 10.20 p.m. when a group of inmates housed in the prison’s ‘E’ Ward allegedly became disorderly shortly after leaving the ward.
Preliminary reports indicate that the disturbance was triggered by a dispute related to drugs within the prison.
In response, police officers, the Police Riot Control Unit and the Police Special Task Force (STF) were immediately deployed to the prison, while additional security measures were introduced to safeguard the facility and its surroundings.
Police said the situation has since been brought under control to a considerable extent, adding that security has been restored within the prison premises as authorities continue to closely monitor developments.
