Japan Has a Long History of Cooperation with Sri Lanka in the Health Sector: Japanese Ambassador Akio Isomata
Japan has a long history of cooperation with Sri Lanka in the health sector, highlighted Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata.
He emphasized this while addressing the ceremony held on September 16 under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to mark the foundation stone laying for the new Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Unit complex at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.
Speaking at the event, Japanese Ambassador Akio Isomata stated:
“It is a great honor for me to participate in this foundation stone laying ceremony for the new Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit building at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Hon. President, Hon. Ministers, and all Sri Lankan stakeholders who worked dedicatedly to make today’s event a success.
Japan has a long history of cooperation with Sri Lanka in the health sector. Globally, cardiovascular diseases account for 32% of total deaths, whereas Sri Lanka records a higher proportion in comparison. In Japan as well, cardiovascular diseases are the second leading cause of death. This is why we considered sharing our experience, knowledge, physical infrastructure, and training for medical professionals as assistance to help face this situation.
Japan takes pride in being a long-standing and reliable partner to Sri Lanka, and I believe this project will further strengthen the friendship and partnership between our two nations. Japan remains ever ready to support the efforts of the Government of Sri Lanka in upgrading medical infrastructure and achieving a sustainable healthcare system.”
The event was attended by Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa; Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe; Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr. Susil Ranasinghe; North Central Province Governor Wasantha Jinadasa; along with Members of Parliament.
Also present were Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), defense heads, government officials, Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Sri Lanka Office Shigeo Honzu, JICA representatives, the hospital director, and hospital staff.
