“Metro Bus Is Like a Beautiful Woman with AIDS” – Gemunu Wijeratne Faces Backlash

Strong criticism is mounting against Gemunu Wijeratne, President of the Private Bus Owners’ Association, over his recent controversial remarks targeted at initiatives aimed at upgrading Sri Lanka’s public transport system to higher quality standards.

Private bus owners themselves have accused Wijeratne of acting in line with the interests of political factions—including the Rajapaksa family and Sajith Premadasa’s coalition—and damaging the broader private bus industry. Following the government’s introduction of the Metro Bus service, a significant number of private bus operators have reportedly requested authorities to allow them to convert their existing route permits to operate under the new Metro model.

Amid these developments, Wijeratne’s derogatory comments comparing the Metro Bus service to “a beautiful woman with AIDS” have drawn sharp public condemnation.
