New Chinese Ambassador Meets JVP General Secretary
A special meeting was held yesterday afternoon (31) at the JVP Head Office in Pelawatta between the newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Wei Huaxiang, and JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva.
The new Ambassador, who presented his credentials on August 25, expressed his deep appreciation for the warm welcome received from the Sri Lankan people since his arrival, noting that he felt no strangeness in Sri Lanka and looks forward to further strengthening bilateral relations during his tenure.
The discussion highlighted the upcoming 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations and long-standing friendship between Sri Lanka and China next year, as well as the 75th anniversary of the historic 1952 Rubber-Rice Pact.
Views were exchanged on the new government’s anti-corruption agenda and the ‘Praja Shakthi’ program aimed at eliminating rural poverty, exploring ways Sri Lanka could leverage China’s extensive experience in poverty alleviation.
Ambassador Huaxiang emphasized that China engages with other nations based on mutual development and respect for national sovereignty, adding that he will actively encourage Chinese investors to direct more investments into Sri Lanka. Sharing a personal insight, he noted that the development path guided by the Chinese Communist Party enabled someone from a remote rural background like himself to rise to the position of a diplomat.
Both parties agreed to further consolidate the friendly ties between the two nations. The meeting was attended by Counselor of the Political Section Mei Jing, Political Section official Qin Ligong, and Third Secretary Jin Ense from the Chinese Embassy, along with Attorney-at-Law Kalpana Madhubhashini from the JVP International Affairs Division.
