President to Lead Foundation Stone Laying for LKR 7.14 Billion Healthcare Expansion Projects Tomorrow
Foundation stones for major health infrastructure development projects valued at LKR 7,148 million will be laid tomorrow (16) under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The initiative aims to strengthen the health system and expand specialized medical services across the Northern, North Central, and Eastern Provinces with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and loan/grant assistance from the Government of India.
The event will be attended by Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, provincial governors, and political representatives. Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata, JICA Chief Representative Shigeo Honzu, and Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha are also scheduled to participate.
The projects to be launched include:
Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital: Construction of an 8-storey, fully equipped state-of-the-art cardiology treatment complex valued at LKR 3,545 million, funded by JICA loan assistance. The facility will feature dedicated Coronary Care Units (CCU) and Critical Care Units (CCU), catheterization laboratories, specialized wards, clinics, diagnostic laboratories, a library, auditorium, X-ray, and ECG units.
Trincomalee District General Hospital: Construction of an 8-storey modern cardiology complex valued at LKR 2,403 million, funded under JICA loan assistance, equipped with complete diagnostic, catheterization, critical care, and clinical facilities.
Mannar District General Hospital: Construction of a modern emergency treatment and accident unit complex valued at LKR 600 million.
Mullaitivu District General Hospital: Construction of a 4-storey modern ward complex valued at LKR 600 million to alleviate patient congestion.
The facilities in Mannar and Mullaitivu are being funded under an LKR 1,200 million Indian assistance package. These developments mark a major milestone for Sri Lanka’s free healthcare system, ensuring regional communities gain direct access to specialized cardiac and emergency care.
