Wimal, Gammanpila, Dilith, Navaratne, Sugeeshwara, and Pathirana Committed Contempt of Court – Fort Magistrate

Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena today (05) ruled that statements made by Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, Dilith Jayaweera, Asanka Navaratne, Sugeeshwara Bandara, and Mahinda Pathirana regarding former intelligence chief Suresh Sallay – who is currently detained and questioned over the Easter Sunday attacks—amount to contempt of court.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) reported facts to the court indicating that the group made remarks in violation of the Contempt of Court, Tribunal or Institution Act No. 08 of 2024.

Accordingly, the Fort Magistrate determined that former Ministers Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila, former President’s Private Secretary Sugeeshwara Bandara, Sri Lanka People’s Party Leader Asanka Navaratne, Senior Professor Mahinda Pathirana, and Member of Parliament Dilith Jayaweera committed contempt of court through statements delivered during a protest held in front of the Fort Railway Station regarding Suresh Sallay’s detention.

The Magistrate issued the order after considering a comprehensive report submitted by the CID.

In his order, the Magistrate stated that steps will be taken to report the matter to the Court of Appeal to initiate necessary legal proceedings against the individuals involved.
