July 06, Colombo (LNW): Passengers travelling by private buses across Sri Lanka will pay higher fares from today (06) following the implementation of the annual fare revision approved by the National Transport Commission (NTC).
Under the revised pricing structure, bus fares have increased by between 12 and 20 per cent, depending on the distance travelled and the category of service. The minimum fare has been raised from Rs. 30 to Rs. 34, while updated rates have also been introduced for luxury and expressway bus services.
The NTC said transport operators have already been informed of the new fare schedule and instructed to reprogramme their electronic ticketing machines to reflect the revised charges. The Commission added that islandwide inspections will commence from today to ensure operators are complying with the approved fare structure and that passengers are not being overcharged.
Meanwhile, Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne said the industry is still in the process of updating ticketing equipment. He noted that it may take up to two more days for all electronic ticketing machines to be fully configured with the new fares, although the revised pricing officially came into force today.
