Hollywood Actress Rosamund Pike Meets Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya
A special discussion was held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Colombo between Hollywood actress Rosamund Pike and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
During the meeting, Rosamund Pike informed the Prime Minister that Sri Lanka’s mine-clearing operations, which have been ongoing for decades, have now reached their final stage.
The renowned actress serves as an ambassador for the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), an international humanitarian mine-clearance organization.
Prior to her meeting with the Prime Minister, she visited the Northern Province to inspect demining activities in the Mannar and Mullaittivu districts. During her visit, she engaged with Sinhala and Tamil personnel performing the high-risk task of mine removal, expressing her appreciation for their dedication and service. She also participated in several awareness programs organized for schoolchildren in former mine-risk areas.
Reports indicate that over 90% of the land identified as mine-contaminated in Sri Lanka has been completely rendered safe. This progress has enabled nearly one million displaced persons to resettle in their hometowns.
Currently, only about 20.8 square kilometers of mine-contaminated land remain to be cleared.
Rosamund Pike noted that funding for demining operations in the remaining areas will be doubled, with the goal of making Sri Lanka mine-free within the next four years.
Upon completion, Sri Lanka is set to become one of the leading countries globally to completely eliminate the threat of landmines, paving the way for rapid development in agriculture, tourism, and infrastructure across the Northern and Eastern provinces.
