South African jurist of Indian origin Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, a former United Nations human rights chief, has reportedly been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting human rights, peace and international law.

Born in Durban on September 23, 1941, to parents of Tamil origin, Pillay grew up during apartheid in South Africa. She went on to build a distinguished legal career, defending anti-apartheid activists and working to advance equality and human rights.

South African jurist Navanethem Pillay, of Indian origin and former UN human rights chief, has reportedly received the Nobel Peace Prize for her extensive work advancing human rights, peace, and international law.

In 1967, Pillay became the first woman to establish a law practice in South Africa's Natal Province. She later made history as the first Black woman appointed to the country's High Court.

Her career also took her to the international stage. She served as a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, as a judge at the International Criminal Court, and as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.

The Nobel Committee's reported announcement in Oslo recognises her contributions to peace and international law.

The Nobel Peace Prize is among the world's most prestigious honours. The 2026 award comes as the prize marks its 125th anniversary.
