Increase in Rainfall Expected After August 6 – Department of Meteorology
Wind speeds across Sri Lanka are expected to increase again after August 6 due to a developing cyclonic condition in the Pacific Ocean south of Japan, according to Ajith Wijemannage, Director General of the Department of Meteorology.
Following August 6, enhanced rainfall is likely over the next few days in the western slopes of the central hills, the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Forecast Complexities Amid El Niño
The Director General noted that despite earlier forecasts predicting below-average rainfall for the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces in August due to the prevailing El Niño condition, accurate forecasting remains complex. This is largely due to potential atmospheric disturbances expected in the Pacific Ocean and the Bay of Bengal during September, which marks the end of the Southwest Monsoon season.
Recent Weather Trends
Explaining the recent weather patterns, Mr. Wijemannage stated that heavy rains were triggered by upper atmospheric disturbances and increased wind speeds, which pushed water vapor toward the central hills. As a result, significant rainfall was recorded in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Kegalle, and Ratnapura districts.
He added that rainfall is expected to continue in parts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Sabaragamuwa, and Western provinces, with a gradual decrease in shower activity anticipated after midday tomorrow.
