Major Breakthrough for Judicial Reforms: Over 60% of Supreme Court Petitions Filed Online
The government’s program to digitalize Sri Lanka’s judicial system has recorded significant progress, demonstrating early success in its broader judicial reform initiative.
This key achievement was highlighted by the latest filings in the Supreme Court concerning the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution. Out of 67 petitions submitted regarding the amendment, 41 were filed online—marking a major milestone in transitioning the country’s court procedures into the digital era.
The digitalization drive forms part of a comprehensive reform program aimed at streamlining court processes, reducing delays, and restoring public trust in the legal system.
Addressing the massive backlog remains a critical target for these reforms. Currently, approximately 1.1 million cases remain pending across the court system, directly impacting around 2.2 million families across plaintiff and defense parties. The expansion of online filing systems and ongoing administrative upgrades are expected to significantly accelerate case handling and alleviate the burden on litigants.
