Sri Lanka and Netherlands Discuss Return of Colonial-Era Artifacts
A key discussion took place today (02) between Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake and Dutch Ambassador to Sri Lanka Ms. Bonnie Horbach at the Presidential Secretariat, focusing on the repatriation of Sri Lankan cultural artifacts held in the Netherlands.
The conversation centered around the return of antiques and historic palm leaf manuscripts, part of a broader Dutch initiative to return colonial-era items to their countries of origin. Ambassador Horbach emphasized the importance of this step in deepening cultural ties and expressed gratitude for Sri Lanka’s support in the process.
The Netherlands has adopted a clear policy to restore such items as a gesture of goodwill and reconciliation. Joint research efforts, starting with a study on papyrus manuscripts, will be carried out by experts from both countries under the leadership of the National Archives of Sri Lanka.
Senior Additional Secretary to the President Roshan Gamage and Krishen Mendis, Cultural Affairs Advisor to the Dutch Ambassador, also took part in the meeting.
