Project Discussed for a Decade Has Finally Become a Reality: Deputy Minister Arun Hemachandra
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra emphasized that while the Trincomalee District faced numerous health service challenges in the past, a project that remained at the discussion level for nearly a decade has finally become a reality today.
He made these remarks addressing the ceremony held yesterday (16) under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to mark the commencement of construction for the new Cardiology Unit at the Trincomalee District General Hospital, which aims to provide comprehensive and modern cardiac care services under one roof for the people of the Eastern Province.
Speaking further at the event, Deputy Minister Arun Hemachandra stated:
“The Trincomalee District faced numerous issues regarding healthcare services over the past period. A project that remained at the discussion stage for around 10 years has today turned into a reality.
Several projects initiated under JICA assistance were halted midway due to the recent economic crisis. It is owing to the steps taken by the President, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, to restructure and stabilize the country’s economy that we are able to recommence this project today. Furthermore, this marks the second project being implemented at this hospital with JICA support.
Over the past two years, various projects and development programs were executed in the Trincomalee District, particularly with significant investments following the general election. We believe this project will serve not only Trincomalee but the entire Eastern Province immensely.”
The event was attended by local religious leaders, Minister of Health and Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Eastern Province Governor Jayantha Lal Ratnasekera, regional public representatives, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Sampath Thuyacontha, government officials, Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata, Chief Representative of the JICA Sri Lanka Office Shigeo Honzu, as well as the hospital director and staff.
