Several Opposition Parties Refuse to Sign No-Confidence Motion Against Speaker

A group of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MPs handed over a no-confidence motion against Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne to the Secretary-General of the Parliament of Sri Lanka yesterday (09).

The motion, bearing the signatures of 44 MPs, was reportedly brought forward primarily due to the personal agenda of Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara.

However, several opposition lawmakers and major opposition parties refused to support or endorse this personal initiative. As a result, it is notable that multiple main opposition parties refrained from signing the no-confidence motion.

Meanwhile, commenting on the motion last Tuesday (06), Chief Government Whip and Minister Bimal Rathnayake stated that the government is fully prepared to provide an opportunity for a debate on the matter at the earliest.
